Central Asia—Help the deaf ‘see’ the Gospel

According to the World Health Organization, 50% of deafness is avoidable through early diagnosis and medical care. It is telling that 80% of deaf and hearing-impaired people live in low- and middle-income countries—because they don’t get this needed medical intervention.

In Kyrgyzstan, there are several hundred thousand deaf people. Across Central Asia, the deaf are labelled as “invalids”. They have few opportunities to seek education or professional careers. Many also suffer from social isolation. Fewer know about God and His Word.

"I saw the Gospel!"
says a deaf person.

"The demand is high - 60 churches recently requested translators of their own!"

Observing this huge need, Bible League workers are “showing” them the truth. In a program that began five years ago in Kyrgyzstan, Christians are being trained by Bible League to become sign-language translators for the deaf. So far, 30 translators are actively signing during church services nationwide.

They also offer Bible studies that encourage social interaction, as well as nurture the faith of their “listeners”. The demand is high—60 churches recently requested translators of their own.

Nearly 1,000 deaf people in Kyrgyzstan have been lifted out of isolation through the efforts of Bible League-trained translators. Sixty-two Bible study groups and eight worshipping groups have also begun in the last five years.

“These dedicated Christians have become vital links between the deaf and the hearing,” says Bible League’s Director of Central Asia Ministry.

AFRICA:
Known by his deeds
Emmanuel’s life was characterized by using black magic, stealing, cheating people, lying, and fornicating. Then, he says, a strange thing happened.

A Christian from the local church visited Emmanuel and told him about Christ. Emmanuel reacted in anger. How surprised he was when the Christian returned the next day.

This Christian came four times, each time sharing with Emmanuel the love of Jesus through God’s Word. After the last visit, Emmanuel decided to go to church to hear the truth about God.

“I attended a church service with mixed emotions, and I was very confused,” says Emmanuel. “When the pastor began to preach, I felt shock—for the pastor was the person who had come to my house and preached Christ to me. The same one! I could not believe it.”

The pastor had been trained by the Bible League to do outreach in his Nigerian village. It was through the persistence of this believer that Emmanuel’s mind was opened to the true God.

Emmanuel made a decision to put his faith in Christ. “I have joined the church,” he says. “Now I can sing and clap and dance and I have a biblical understanding of salvation. God speaks to me through His Word. Praise the Lord!”

Nepal—Reaching remote mountain areas

Early this month the Nepalese Parliament voted to change the country to a federal state. This move, together with the political violence during April last year, has drastically altered Nepal’s status as the world’s only Hindu Kingdom. It is now a secular state. The king no longer is revered as the incarnation of the Hindu god and there is freedom for all religions.

The political change creates a climate of receptivity to the Gospel. “God has blessed the churches in Nepal with much growth through Bible League,” says Bible League's National Director in Nepal.

Bible League is currently the only source for Scriptures for Christians in the remote areas in central and northern Nepal. Many of these areas are only accessible by long hikes on difficult mountain trails, making it a challenge to locate and minister to churches here. Yet, Bible League is actively searching out new churches to provide them with Scriptures, Bible study materials and training. At present, Bible League is able to partner with more than 800 churches in these areas.

“Despite much difficulty, we praise the Lord that 2,649 new Philips (Bible study leaders) were trained last year. We also saw more people than we had anticipated who became members of a local church,” says the National Director. Last year, Bible League baptised a total of 7,450 new believers, trained 10,784 Bible study graduates and placed 60,000 Scriptures in Nepal.

“The local churches remain strong and optimistic. Nepali Christianity has an enthusiastically evangelistic flavour,” says the National Director. These ambassadors of Christ need God’s Word to equip them for evangelism and discipleship. Will you help expand God’s kingdom in Nepal by providing them with God’s Word?

Kenya—Churches ‘mushroom’ among least evangelised communities

In 2006, a total of 31,050 Scriptures were placed in the hands of believers in the three north-eastern regions of Kenya where a number of the least evangelised communities are located.

These communities have a population of more than 5 million but less than 0.5% are Christians. Some tribal people in these remote areas in Kenya are still practising traditional animism and Islam. They are waiting to know God’s Word.

“By the grace of God we were able to train groups of Church Planters in the three areas. The Church Planters trained had planted 82 new churches and there were 3,998 new believers baptised!” says Bible League’s National Director in Kenya.

We are excited to see the power of the Gospel transforming the whole community and people are leaving behind their pagan ways of life. This transformation is made possible because there are many Church Planters who have been ‘fired up’ by God to participate in His mighty work in this land.

“I realised that God is working mightily through Bible League’s Church Planting Program, which is bringing great revival to the area. After the first three months of training, I went to the targeted areas to practise the skills that I learnt. The harvest was great in which 150 people gave their lives to Jesus!” exclaims Lekurayo, a 67-year-old Bible League-trained Church Planter.

Lekurayo was able to begin five Bible study groups which later came together to worship under a new church. By the time he was graduating, Lekurayo had already planted three new churches. “I feel fired up by God and I am well equipped to plant more churches. Praise Jesus!” says Lekurayo.

When God’s Word continued to spread across the land of Kenya, churches began to mushroom in every village. More and more people were being brought into fellowship with Jesus.

“Please pray for the three Church Planting groups as they continue to minister to these remote areas, we trust the Lord for more breakthroughs,” says the National Director. We invite you to support our workers in Kenya prayerfully and financially. They desperately need God’s Word to continue this important ministry. To place Scriptures in Africa, Click Here

Pray for migrant workers in China. These migrant workers are in search of jobs to feed their families. But because they are not documented and do not have the permission of the government to live in Beijing they live in very poor conditions. Their children are not accepted in the public schools and they do not receive healthcare. They tend to live in poor ‘suburbs’ outside of Beijing. Although the city needs them because they do many jobs in the city, their living conditions are very harsh. In one village of about 30,000 people, named Tianzhu, there is a need for Bibles. They are very grateful for the BL to help. Pray that Christians in these poor communities can radiate the love of Christ.

Dear Praying Friend,

“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” (2 Timothy 1:5 NIV)

China—Children’s Story Bible's bless the whole family

Increasingly, God has used the Children’s Story Bible to bless more and more families in China. “There is a very high demand for the Children’s Story Bible. Many churches are using it to train their own children and to reach out to non-Christian families through these believing children!” reports our National Director in China.

In 2006, Bible Network was able to place 164,926 Children’s Story Bibles in China. These resources have created a unique opportunity for evangelism into the wider community.

“Children who have read the stories and turned to Jesus have brought their friends, parents and even grandparents to churches,” says the National Director.

Many of these people, especially the women, were then invited to engage in the study of God’s Word using the Project Philip Bible studies. “Many of them have turned to Jesus. They were encouraged to study the Bible together with other women and eventually many more in their wider network of relationships was influenced by God’s Word,” explains the National Director.

God’s Word changes individuals. It also brings about transformation within the family dynamics and relationships.

“The Word of God saved my family,” says Ling, the mother of a 14-year-old son. Before Ling became a Christian, she used worldly values to raise her son. She thought that success meant having her son go to university. Under pressure, her son became rebellious and the relationship with his parents was strained.

Touched by God’s unconditional love after she studied God’s Word, Ling finally understood what the Bible says about true success. Today, she loves and accepts her son just like God has accepted her. She also tries to instruct her son using biblical principles and values. Having seen changes in the life of his mother, the son has stopped rebelling and has started behaving better.

“Getting along with teenagers is a difficulty facing all parents. But I have found the secret—bring yourself and your child before God. Accept Him as the Lord of your family and let Him help you so that you can instruct your children with His Word," says Ling.

“If I didn’t know God, I would not have that endless love for my son!” she adds.

God’s endless love was shown most clearly as He gave His own Son—Jesus Christ—to die on the cross for sinners. Jesus, the resurrected Saviour, the living Word of God, will continue to bring true life to more mothers and children in China.

As the number of children born in China each year grows from the current 78,000 to the projected figure of 140,000 in 2010, these children—the future leaders of China—will need God’s Word more than ever.

Albania—Bible Network partners with Campus Crusade for Christ to reach the youth

Bible Network and Campus Crusade for Christ will partner with local churches in Albania this July in an evangelistic campaign to reach the youth in Tirana—Albania’s capital and largest city. Through this campaign, Christians in Tirana will demonstrate their passion for Jesus Christ as they cover this city with God’s Word.

Albania has Europe’s youngest population, with more than 30 percent of its 3.5 million people under the age of 18. “The youth and their families are in desperate need of the transforming power of God’s Word,” says our Ministry Director for Central/Eastern Europe.

Bible Network will help meet that need by providing 10,000 Bibles, 100,000 New Testaments and 120,000 Scripture portions. Combined with supporting evangelistic and discipleship materials, these resources will help equip local churches to evangelise the youth and disciple them in follow up Bible studies. They will be encouraged to join a local community of believers.

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word." (Psalm 119:9, NIV)
“We have been using the Project Philip Bible study materials in an evangelistic Bible study and have led five teenagers to turn to Christ!” says a local pastor. God’s hand is definitely at work here since all of these teenagers come from one of the most resistant cities of Albania.

Since 1997, we have graduated 55,811 Albanians through organised Bible studies, baptised 2,445 new believers and planted 72 new churches. We currently partner with 135 (out of 180) evangelical churches in Albania.

“Bible Network is excited for the opportunity to come alongside the churches in Tirana—together obeying the Great Commission,” says the Ministry Director. But there is still much work to do in Albania where less than one percent of the population declare themselves Christian.

Will you join us in reaching the youth this July, so that more young people would live according to His Word and keep their way pure? To place Scriptures in Central & Eastern Europe, Click Here

CHICAGO—Bible League ministry results reveal over 1.4 million children’s Scriptures provided worldwide in 2006. From Albania to Zimbabwe—lives of hundreds and thousands of children were impacted and transformed by the power of God’s Word.

Sudha, a young girl from a remote village in India, is one example of Bible League’s worldwide impact. Sudha became affected by chicken pox. The result: she lost her sight and was unable to continue with her education. Her parents took her to many doctors—only to lose money and see no results. When Sudha and her family were left helpless and broken hearted, they met a Bible League-trained Christian. He conveyed the Scriptures to Sudha, and soon her entire family came to know the love of Jesus. The wound in the eye of Sudha is cured and little by little she is regaining her sight. Sudha has expressed that, through her faith, she believes God will heal her completely.

“Throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America alone, 40% of the population is age 15 or under,” said Mike Southworth, Executive Vice President of Bible League Ministries. “Some studies suggest that 85% of those who will receive Christ will do so before age 25. This means there are billions of boys and girls around the world who are in the most spiritually influential stage of life—they are the future.”

Southworth continued, “Bible League has a unique opportunity, working with local churches worldwide, to equip believers with Scriptures and training. Many children live in areas where they will not have access to God’s Word any other way, either because Bibles are too expensive or just not available. We are so grateful for our partners who, through their gifts, help us make these Bibles and materials available.”

By placing God’s Word in the hands of these children, and teaching Biblical truths worldwide, Bible League is witnessing precious lives being transformed forever.

New life in Christ

As a young person, I had a peer pressure problem. I was doing everything that my friends approved. I was very disobedient to my parents. I was living a sexually immoral life, having several boyfriends.

One day I was invited by my friend to attend a Bible study. As I went through multiple studies, one chapter, in particular, touched my heart—the one that talked about controlling your tongue. I realized that I did not have self-control, but was controlled by evil desires and sin. I gave my life to the Lord.

Ever since I gave my life to the Lord, my character changed. I have self-esteem and am no longer controlled by peer pressure. I am serving the Lord.

My life is filled with joy everyday. I enjoy praying and reading the Word of God—I attend the Bible study everyday.

Timeline of tragedies
“Within a period of two years, my husband had cancer and died,” she explains. “My son got into a car accident, and then began taking drugs and alcohol. Our house burned down. I was depressed, got sick, and had to undergo several surgeries.”

“I wanted to live!”
“Despite all these hardships, I wanted to live. I wanted to bring up my children and grandchildren. But I didn’t know where I would find the energy to do this. Then I remembered how my mom would read the Bible and pray for me. I had a great desire to have my own Bible.”

A Bible of her own
“We have a church in our village. I saw how the lives of our village people had changed since they started reading the Bible and attending the church.”

She approached Dima to help her get a Bible of her very own. “Now I can’t live without my Bible,” says Yelizaveta. “I try to read it every free minute I have. As I read my Bible, I realize how important it is to walk with God daily. The Bible is not only the Book that I need—it is a vital necessity for everybody! CHICAGO—Bible League and Campus Crusade for Christ partner with local churches in Albania this summer in an evangelistic project to reach Tirana—Albania’s capital and largest city. Through this project, which begins in July, believers in Tirana will demonstrate their passion for the Lord Jesus Christ, as they blanket this city with God’s Word.

“Albania has Europe’s youngest population, with more than 30 percent of the 3.5 million total population under the age of 18,” said Reverend Robert Martin, Director of Bible League’s Central/Eastern Europe Ministries. “Youth and their families are in desperate need of the transforming power of God’s Word.”

This summer, Bible League will help meet that need by providing 10,000 Bibles, 100,000 New Testaments, and 120,000 Scripture portions, equipping local churches to mobilize in Tirana—putting God’s Word into action.

But it doesn’t stop there. With less than one percent of Albania’s population declaring themselves Christian, the initial campaign is only the first step in transforming lives through God’s Word. Beyond the summer, Bible League will follow up the campaign through these local churches in Tirana as they engage people in Bible studies, train leaders, and lead them to a local body of believers.

“Bible League is excited for the opportunity to come alongside the churches in Tirana—together obeying the Great Commission,” concludes Martin.

Dear Praying Friend,

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)

Central Asia—16,925 Bible studies completed despite severe persecution

In 2006 God has led Bible Network to organise 16,925 Bible studies, placed 644,778 Scriptures, baptised 1,324 new believers and plant 50 new churches in many unchurched areas in Central Asia. “Each new church and new worshipping centre established across Central Asia is truly a ‘miracle’. We praise God for all that He accomplished,” exclaims our National Director in Central Asia.

This result is truly a miracle because persecution of Christians across Central Asia is harsh and real. Governments pass laws to restrict the spread of the Gospel and the registration of new churches. Many new converts who have a Muslim background are often beaten and isolated by their families who attempt to bring them ‘back to their senses’. Many more are fined, imprisoned, stoned or even killed.

The opposition is partly due to the misconception that Christianity is an intrusive import from the West. But recent research discovers that Christianity was practised long before Islam or Zoosticism throughout Central Asia.

This fact has gradually attracted more Central Asians to seek God’s truth. “The Holy Spirit is clearly moving in the hearts of people here,” says the National Director. This is evident in the fact that in one Central Asian country, the number of Bible Network Bible studies completed in 2006 has doubled compared to 2005.

Through the Project Philip program Bible studies, Central Asians are engaged in the study of God’s Word and they receive their own copy of the Bible upon the completion of the study. It is in encountering the Living Word of God that these new believers receive the strength to persevere in their suffering.

“As former Muslims who are now committed to Christ, we have taken a strong stand. Death threats, poison, loss of land and home will not deter us,” says a Bible Network-trained Church Planter. “We must go on to live a Christian life,” he declares.

This declaration can be realised because Jesus Christ, the Risen Saviour, has broken the power of death. We invite you to stand by our suffering brothers and sisters in Central Asia by providing them with God’s Word. Your gifts would help them know the comfort and the power of God’s Word. China—God’s Word reaches non-evangelised areas

During 2006, God has opened opportunities for Bible Network to develop new contacts in the north-eastern part of China. For the first time, God’s Word was made available to advance outreach into areas where there is no presence of the Gospel.

In this remote region of China where terrain is rough and poverty is severe, life is difficult. Sometimes there is no rain for a whole year. Not all areas have electricity. “People have been thirsty for rain every year but they are thirstier for the Word of God,” says our National Director in China.

God has heard their yearning and now He is watering this vast but dry land with His precious Word. “This was the first time many people had heard about Jesus Christ,” says a local Christian. “They cried and cried. They pleaded for us to come back to help them,” he recalls.

Slowly and gradually several small churches have been established. But these dedicated Church Planters have paid a high price. Three of them were put in jail for planting churches.

It is true that China is changing. People in the main cities can go to church openly. A recent article from China Vision Online published by Christian Communications also reveals that there is a growing trend even for non-Christians to attend church services during Easter or Christmas time. They are curious about Christianity and they want to ‘taste’ what it is like.

Nevertheless, the risk of harassment or arrest in certain areas of China is still real. According to a news report by Christian Today in early March, 34 Chinese house church leaders in a north-eastern province of China were arrested during their Bible study.

Despite these difficulties, Christians have not stopped sharing God’s Word. “We as God’s children have to preach the salvation of the cross,” says a Bible Network-trained Christian. It is due to these faithful Bible trained Church Planters that 465 new churches—95 more than that in 2005—were planted last year in China.

We are committed to support these persecuted Christians in China who need God’s Word so desperately. Our Risen Lord, the Living Word of God, is their source of strength. Will you join us in sending them God’s Word, so that they may ‘drink’ from this source of strength? To place Scriptures in China, Click Here

CENTRAL EASTERN EUROPE:
“My name is Pavlinka, and I live in Bulgaria. I’m married, and I have two daughters.”

Empty dreams
“When I was a student, I had a friend who would talk to me about God. But back then I was interested in a completely different lifestyle. I thought it would limit my perspective on life and be boring to be a believer. I thought I would be happy when I had my own family and children. But when I finally had all that I had dreamed of, I felt unsatisfied and empty inside. I had two wonderful kids, but still my life seemed meaningless.”

A Bible of her own
“Then Jana [a Bible League-trained worker] gave me a Bible study booklet from the Bible League. When I finished that first booklet, I received a New Testament. When I completed another three-part study, I received a Bible and became part of a Bible study group.”

Living by the Word
“My favorite passage from the Bible became Jesus’ words in John 8:31-32—‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ When I read those verses I finally understood that only the truth of God’s Word could bring me joy and peace.

“Now I am a member of the local evangelical church. I go there together with my two daughters. Right now they are taking part in a Bible League Bible study for children.”

CENTRAL ASIA:
Born and raised in a Muslim family in Central Asia, Batma had long felt sad and empty as she struggled to find answers to questions like, “Who am I?” and “Why do I exist?” Then a Bible League-trained worker showed her the Injil—God’s Word.

The power of the Word
“I was shown where to begin reading,” Batma says. “It was fascinating. As I read, I believed in Jesus Christ. I was thrilled to know I had a Savior, and wondered if there were others who believed as I did.”

New person, new pressure
The friend who gave Batma the Injil then invited her to church, where she publicly placed her faith in Jesus Christ. “I was a new person,” she says confidently. “I confessed my sins and professed my faith in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son and my Lord and Savior.” But her parents were irate.

Batma’s family turned against her. The pressure was so great, that she left the church and her Christian friends, and broke contact with all believers. But she kept her Injil hidden, and read it daily.

A return to Christ
One day, as she read 2 Peter 2:20-22, Batma knew she had to return to Christ. Leaving behind her job, family, and friends, she went to another town and was baptized. “I know that God’s Word was written for me,” she says. “I know Jesus Christ and why He came, and I am waiting for His return. Jesus Christ forgave me of my sins, changed me, and adopted me as His child. Today I am happy in Christ and want to live in and serve Him.”

Click here to donate now.

In 2006 God has led Bible League to complete 16,925 Bible studies, place 644,778 Scriptures, baptise 1,324 new believers and plant 50 new churches in many unchurched areas in Central Asia. “Each new church and new worshipping centre established across Central Asia is truly a ‘miracle’. We praise God for all that He accomplished,” exclaims Bible League’s National Director in Central Asia.

This is evident in the fact that in one Central Asian country, the number of Bible League Bible studies completed in 2006 has doubled compared to 2005.

Through the Project Philip Bible League Bible studies, Central Asians are engaged in the study of God’s Word and they receive their own copy of the Bible upon the completion of the study. It is in encountering the Living Word of God that these new believers receive the strength to persevere in their suffering.

“As former Muslims who are now committed to Christ, we have taken a strong stand. Death threats, poison, loss of land and home will not deter us,” says a Bible League-trained Church Planter.

Church Planting
Bible League often works with trained Christians who take our evangelism and discipleship Bible studies into church-less areas. When people come together to study God’s Word, and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, a need for worship is born. That’s why Bible League provides church planter training—so people desiring to worship together will have a pastor to lead them.

This unique, hands-on training program is designed for lay Christians. Local believers, chosen by their churches, become empowered through training and Scripture materials to establish new churches in church-less communities.

In 2006, Bible League helped local Christians establish 5,807 new churches worldwide. And, over the years, we have published and placed Scriptures in more than 450 languages in countries from the Arctic to the jungles of Africa and the Amazon.

Africa

Astonishing twist
For those who have heard stories about persecuted Christians in Africa, it might be surprising to learn that nearly 50% of all Africans are Christians. And for those used to reading about religious freedom violations, it might also seem peculiar that—in many cases—government officials have nothing to do with suffering Christians on this continent.

Nevertheless, the torment for countless African Christians is extreme. And the suffering they endure is no less real than that of Christians in any other persecuted region.

A religious fault line
An invisible—but easily identifiable—line extends across the continent of Africa. Beginning on the west coast of Sierra Leone, and moving straight eastward to the Indian Ocean, is where the bulk of persecution takes place. The vast majority of African Christians reside south of this line. On the other hand, the northern population is almost entirely Muslim.

Where these two religions meet is nothing short of a full-scale collision. And Christians in countries like Nigeria, Sudan, and Ethiopia face the brunt of this conflict on a daily basis.

A different kind of pain
When a northern African acknowledges faith in Jesus Christ, he is viewed as a traitor to his family, his neighbors, and his culture. And choosing to accept this status does not come without its consequences. African Christians often forfeit their burial rights, their standing within the community, and the love of their family.

In addition, African culture does not view child custody in the same light as most Westerners. The dowry given for a marriage often dictates to whom a child belongs. As a result, many Muslim families have taken children away from their parents when the mother or father converted to Christianity.

Violence persists
In several instances, the persecution of African Christians has also included violence. Even in recent days, religious extremists have struck out with horrendous acts of torture.

Compass reports that a Nigerian pastor and 48 members of his congregation were among 200 killed February 2004. Religious militants had attacked the church in a rampage within the predominantly Christian village. In addition, they went through the village killing Christians and burning down their houses.

Compass goes on to report that, the day after the pastor’s funeral, a group of bandits burned down two additional church sanctuaries.

Power through prayer
In the midst of such extreme pain and violence, Africans are still turning to Jesus Christ. Lift up these Christians in your prayers. Ask God to provide them protection as well as the strength to live out their faith on a daily basis.

Pray also for those who are committing the crimes against Christianity. Pray that they, like the Apostle Paul, will turn away from their wickedness and come to fully understand the grace of our loving God.

India—Anti-conversion law creates new threats

On 19 Feb 2007 the anti-conversion bill became law in the Indian state of Himachael Pradesh. The reoccurrence of this ‘official’ persecution, which was on the decline last year, poses a mounting threat to Christians.

Bible League’s National Director in India reports that anti-gospel activists are becoming stronger. Recently, a Bible League church planter was beaten by a mob and had his left hand broken.

These threats, however, have not stopped Indians from seeking God’s Word. “There are hundreds of thousands of people who want to know more about Jesus Christ,” reports Bible League’s National Director in India. Bible League’s strategic Bible study program which combines evangelism with discipleship ensures that seekers are ‘followed up’.

“It is remarkable to note that Bible League training and Scriptures are being used from the highest inhabited village in the Himalayan Mountains to churches on the mud flats of the Ganges River delta,” says the National Director.

Last year, there were 331, 494 Indians who completed the Project Philip Bible study program and 1,149,554 Scriptures were placed. Nearly 100,000 new believers were baptised and committed to the church. In Himachal Pradesh alone, known for being the home of the Dalai Lama, Bible League’s ministry has grown three times compared to the year before.

New ministry has been developing in the northern Hindi belt as well as among Muslim communities. India has the third largest population of Muslims in the world. They need God’s Word and many are eager to know about Jesus.

“I heard about Jesus years and years ago. At that time, I asked where I might find this man Jesus. Someone said, ‘Oh, I think he is from the next town.’ Another man said, ‘Maybe he is selling in the marketplace…’ For such a long time I looked and looked but no one could explain Him to me,” testifies a new believer in India.

Will you help people in India find Jesus? It is estimated that if the number of Christians in India were to increase by 1% of the population, Bible League would be confronted by a need for over 10 million Bibles. Your support will greatly help Indians meet Jesus through God’s Word. Provide Scriptures for India now.

South Africa

Closing the gap
After 30-plus turbulent years under “apartheid,” South Africa held its first national democratic elections in 1994. Under the rule of the previously all-white government, the political and economic gap between whites and the black majority had expanded at a rapid rate. Now, though racially motivated laws have been repealed, the black population continues to struggle in getting back on their feet.

To assist in the recovery process, the government of South Africa has set up several mini-villages outside of urban areas. These settlements are a long way from glamorous. In fact, according to the Director of African Ministries, residents are on “the edge of survival.” He says, “This is a new kind of hunting and gathering society with evidence of this in the ‘houses’ and on the streets; in the clothing they wear, or often the lack thereof.”

But at least these settlements are allowing people—who were previously residing illegally on the property of others—to have land they can call their own.

“Blessed are the poor”
In the midst of these small-budget villages, God is opening big-opportunity doors. Trained by the Bible League, South African Christians are establishing evangelical churches in these brand-new, unreached communities. As the physically and spiritually deprived pour in, church planters are sharing the hope of the Gospel with them.

It’s not an easy task for church planters to reach a group that has been neglected for so long. Faced with unemployment and hunger, it’s hard for many to look beyond their circumstances. South Africa’s church planting coordinator says that they are asked, “If Jesus loves me, why I am like this?” He responds, “God loves us—even in our poverty. And he can change our lives.” (To read the testimony of this church planter, click here.)

Over the course of time, church planters continue to share this message through their actions and through God’s Word. One by one, the impoverished of South Africa are coming to know the spiritual wealth of a life in Christ. And slowly but surely, Christ’s Church is growing in these shantytowns.

In truth and love
It’s not just among the poor that Christ’s Church is growing. Bible League-trained workers are laboring faithfully to establish new churches throughout South Africa—in areas where there was no previous evangelical presence.

Bible League-trained church planters are succeeding in their endeavor for two reasons. First, they are founding churches on the basis of God’s Word. While churches are plentiful in this country, many neglect the teachings of the Bible. God is blessing the work of church planters who point Africans to the Truth.

Moreover, South African church planters are succeeding because they use a strong relational approach in ministry. Many of them continue to work in normal jobs—even after they have completed church planter training. Through everyday conversations, church planters are building evangelistic bridges to their co-workers.

A matter of prayer

Remember South Africa in your prayers. While many steps are being taken forward, this country has a long way to go towards healing. Poverty abounds, racial tensions remain, and millions still don’t understand what it means to have Jesus as their Savior.

KENYA:
It was definitely the Holy Spirit. Mutua Kitoma had no other reason to attend an informational meeting about the Bible League’s ministry in Kenya.
At that point, his faith level was enough, he thought. Being called an “average Christian” was contentment for him.

But Mutua went home from that meeting and experienced God’s Word in action. He drank deeply from his Bible, exploring it anew through the Bible League’s study materials. At the conclusion of his study, Mutua said to himself, “This is not just for me; it’s for my wife, too.”

Mutua repeated the Bible study along with his wife, getting more enthusiastic.

At the conclusion, he spoke for both of them: “This is not just for us; it’s for our whole family!”

Once more, Mutua studied the Word, leading his children and extended family members. The Spirit nudged again. Mutua declared, “Our church council must go through this!”

And they did, together with Mutua. The same study. Fresh revelations from the Word. Do you see where the Spirit-led momentum is taking this story? That’s right. Mutua, his pastor, and the whole church council carried their renewed passion for God’s Word out to the entire congregation.

“That church is on fire for God and the Bible as never before,” says Mwaya Wa Kitavi, the Bible League’s Associate Director of Africa Ministries. “They were churchgoers, but had no previous discipleship. Every person who studied the Word received a Bible, and they are now making new connections far beyond their church.”

It’s the Bible’s power unleashed! God’s Word in action in Kenya—and around the world—leads people to a relationship with Christ and transform lives.

Click here to donate now.

Middle East

A crack in the door
In the Middle East, many doors are tightly closed, locking Middle Easterners in with the darkness.

But Bible League-trained Christians eagerly watch for a crack in the door—a small opening through which to spread the light of the Gospel.

Sometimes the door opens on one group of people, and not another. But Middle Eastern Christians patiently wait, ready to implement careful, extra-sensitive approaches when the Spirit makes a way.

In some places, ministry is just beginning. In other places, long-suffering Christians have been glowing steadfastly for years. And despite the suffocating darkness, it is the light of God that shines through them.

The darkness comprehends it not
Islamic hostility—combined with the threat of terrorism and the added heat of international pressures—has made the Middle East an undeniably volatile mission field.

In many places, sharing the Good News about Jesus with Muslims is forbidden, and the authorities often strictly enforce laws designed to keep Christians in their place.

Brokenness and openness among Muslims, where it can be found, is often held in bondage, fearing backlash from angry neighbors, families, and friends.

Not a spirit of fear
But Christians in the Middle East long to see God illumine the darkness in their lands. They work comfortably and dynamically among their own people—in places that are tightly closed against the efforts of anyone else.

One soul at a time, the Spirit is using the Word of life to transform lives and break spiritual bonds. The body of Christ in the Middle East is growing.

While there are stories of restrictions and persecutions, there are also stories of breakthroughs over the radio airwaves and in personal relationships.

Christians face countless risks, including death, yet they continue to discreetly share Jesus with their countrymen. The "veils of mystery" surrounding God are falling away, as many come to know Jesus as their Savior.

Making dark places light
In spite of overwhelming odds, many churches have been planted. New bodies of believers are being established in areas where there were none before. And these Middle Eastern Christians are being further trained to take the Light of Jesus with them wherever they go.

Their firm conviction: Open the door a crack, and the light pours in.

A ray of hope
Please pray for the brothers and sisters seeking to establish and shepherd new bodies of believers in the Middle East, who face overwhelming persecution and resistance to the message of hope that they long to bring to their fellow countrymen. And petition God to open the doors in the hearts of Middle Eastern peoples, and to flood their weary, dark lands with His Light.

“The ‘veils of mystery’ surrounding God are falling away, as many come to know Jesus as their Savior.”

"He heard our fears and prayers"

Nearly two years after the establishment of anti-conversion laws, Indian Christians are celebrating the effects of their repeal. Only time will tell the long-term blessings of this legal change, but several resulting miracles have already taken place. In the first month alone, a group of 50 Indian church planters reports having baptized over 1,200 new Christians!

Christians throughout India were stunned when the pro-Hindu government was overturned in the Spring 2004 national election, and several state governments annulled local anti-conversion laws.

Said one local Bible League-trained Christian, "I praise God for enabling us to spread the Gospel in our country .He heard our fears and prayers regarding the election .God gave us an extra bonus when He made our state government remove the anti-conversion law which was in force until now. Hallelujah!"

Undeterred by fear
Indian Christians have faced many hardships in sharing the Gospel. Bible League-trained Christians in India report that they or fellow believers have faced threats, physical attacks, and jail time for sharing their faith.

Baptisms, in particular, became a significant challenge for local churches. Under the anti-conversion laws, anyone who chose to become baptized was legally obligated to seek permission from the government, as well as provide them with the name of the person performing the baptism. Fearing repercussions, many new Christians did not make this outward profession of faith until after the laws were repealed.

Still, thousands of Indians were undeterred in their faith. A local Bible League-trained Christian, while under the anti-conversion law, wrote, "We continue to encourage Christians through the Word of God. We remind them of the promises (Matthew 28:20) and the testimonies of the great martyrs . We are encouraged to fulfill the Great Commission of Christ, regardless of what happens to us. We are prepared for imprisonment, punishment, and even death for the sake of Christ."

Relying on God's faithfulness
Continue to pray for the Church in India. The repeal of state anti-conversion laws has been a tremendous miracle-but challenges still remain. One state continues to uphold anti-conversion laws, and persecution persists throughout the country.

Yet God has been faithful to His children in India, and they are recognizing Him as their Savior by the thousands. Praise God for increasing opportunities to share His Word with the lost.

The Great Commission

Matthew 28:19-20
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Cambodia

A scarred past
In Cambodia, a church might consist of 10 Christians gathered beneath a sugar palm—its trunk still bearing shrapnel scars from the battles that have been fought around it. Or it might be 40 worshippers who congregate in the house of a Bible League-trained church planter.

In either case, Cambodian Christians cannot erase the deep scars that have been left by decades of brutal violence.

Years of atrocities and political turmoil have gouged out a spiritual void in the hearts of Cambodians. It is a void that the national religion of Buddhism—with its unattainable path to enlightenment—has failed to fill.

Picking up the shards
In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, Cambodia was left with socialist groups fighting for control. Millions of innocent people were executed, and civil war raged for decades.

Although a democratic government has begun with the help of the UN, the painful scars still remain. And the wounds reopen every time another mine explodes, planted years ago by the warring factions.

The vast majority of Cambodians have looked to Buddhist rites to try to heal their wounds. But Christians in Cambodia know that the peace their country aches for is a peace that only Jesus Christ can impart.

A different explosion
Eager to impart that peace to their fellow countrymen, Cambodian Christians are enthusiastically entering church planter training. And church growth is exploding.

Cambodia is the first Buddhist country in Southeast Asia to show such a mass movement toward accepting the Gospel message. In a country shrouded so long by Buddhism, it is remarkable to see hearts being opened, one by one, to the light of the truth.

The people of Cambodia are on their way to discovering that the only true refuge from turmoil and trouble is found in the saving blood of Jesus. And Bible League-trained church planters long to shepherd them with an eternal, unshakable comfort.

Fire burns their heart
Cambodian Christians have a vision for their nation and a heart for the whole world. “Fire burns in our heart!” one pastor says. “We long to bring our nation, every community, into His heavenly kingdom.”

And God is using them to do just that. As they impact their communities with the love of Jesus, their nation is changing, one soul at a time. The body of Christ is growing, as local gatherings of believers are established in areas where there were no churches before. We are excited to be a part of what God is doing in Cambodia.

“The Lord uses the Bible League here in Cambodia,” another pastor explains. “It is really a great help to our hungry nation and us. His living Word enables us to be fully fed, and will help us bring our whole nation to the Kingdom of Jesus Christ our Lord in the near future. May the Lord bless the Bible League to carry on this good ministry until we reach the whole world for Jesus. Amen!”

Cambodia’s future
As more Cambodians are brought into fellowship with Jesus Christ and His Church, please pray for the shepherds who care for this tender new flock. Pray that God would call more Christians to labor in this teeming harvest field, as the indigenous church planting movement spreads throughout the country.

We talk a lot about the power of the Bible, so here is a verse and a short comment on the Word.

Galatians 2:20 -- I myself no longer live, but Christ lives in me. So I live my life in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (NLT)

When you feel overwhelmed and everything seems out of control, remember that Jesus lives in you. He loved you enough to die in your place, and He is strong enough to save you each day. When did you first trust Jesus?

China —Help Chinese people welcome New Year with God’s Word

Last week, Chinese people around the world celebrated 'Year of the Pig' with feasts, lion dances and displays of firecrackers—an ancient Chinese tradition meant to drive away evil spirits and bad luck. They also greeted one another with, “Kung Hei Fat Choi” (which means “wish you wealth”), believing that this will bring them wealth and good luck for the year ahead. Many Chinese people also flocked to Buddhist or Taoist temples to pray and to offer incense, hoping to secure their blessings: fortune, health, good luck and peace.

Being 'blessed’ is very important in Chinese culture. However, not all Chinese people understand what it means to be truly blessed as David writes,

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2, NIV)

Millions of people in China are waiting for God’s Word to enlighten them with truth. They need God’s Word to come to faith, so that they may rejoice in God’s blessing.

“God used the Scripture to enlighten me, to let me know that no matter how much money I could earn, I should take it and be thankful. I needed to make sure I had enough time for my faith and my family,” says Chen, a Bible League-trained Christian. Last year, Bible League placed 665,322 Bibles in China and trained 108,420 Christians through the Project Philip Bible study program.

Today, there are still over 50 million Christians in China who don’t have a Bible. In some rural areas, there is only one Bible between 10 or more Christians. These Christians are longing for God’s Word to help them grow in faith and to be reminded of God’s grace in their suffering.

AFRICA:
Karwana’s father, a revered witchdoctor in his region, received the demonic message “that his wife would bear a son with a black spot in the eye—that this son would inherit the witchcraft.”

Four days after Karwana was born, his father died suddenly with no apparent signs of sickness. The boy grew up a marked person. From childhood on, he felt absolutely controlled by dark forces. These demons kept him in bondage, instructing him not to go to school, not to sleep on a bed or cover himself with bed sheets, and to eat only two meals per week.

A timely intervention
Benjamin, a Bible League-trained Christian, met Karwana just before the witchdoctor launched into his most daunting tasks yet. Karwana had received the “assignment” to kill 75 adults before the end of the year, and to sacrifice 6 children within months! Benjamin acted quickly, inviting Karwana to a Bible study led by a local pastor. Already curious about the good things he had heard about God, Karwana accepted.

The Bible’s message broke through and an intense prayer time led to deliverance! The pastor says, “That man was delivered by the power of the Word of God. I didn’t even have to try to cast out demons; they fled by themselves!”

More powerful than he expected
The witchdoctor embraced the Gospel of Jesus Christ and surrendered all of his demonic possessions—burned in a celebration of transformation! Karwana had no idea that anything could replace the power he enjoyed as an instrument of evil. Until … the Bible’s power was introduced to him. A divine meeting, a nurturing relationship, and God’s transforming Word.

Today, Karwana has harnessed that power, lives by it, and shares it with more lost Ugandans.

Pray that the process will go on well and that we will get people who can do the job well and work together without strife. We thank the Lord for opening this door and giving this vision to our Zimbabwe team.

Bible Power

Tatiana, of the ethnic group called the "Kalmyks," has experienced a lifetime of disappointments. At a very young age, both of her parents died. Then as an adult, her husband went through a botched leg surgery that left him unable to walk or work. Even as their finances were falling apart, Tatiana received more heartbreaking news from her doctor: she would never be able to have children.
Tatiana was a devoted Buddhist, but this did nothing to bring her peace. Tatiana says, "I became depressed, but had no one to turn to."

How can God help me?
She had come to be friends with a woman at her workplace. Soon Tatiana found herself pouring out her problems and disappointments to this new friend, who listened intently. "You should put your cares into the hands of God," her Christian friend said.

"How can God help me?" Tatiana asked. "Can God give me a bag of money?" She wasn't mocking her friend; she truly didn't understand how God-if He really does exist-could possibly help her.

To help find answers, her friend invited Tatiana to come to church with her.

In the presence of God
Tatiana looked around at the people in the service. She saw faces of peace, heard joyful singing, and was amazed at how they prayed to God. "It was as though they were really speaking to God and God was invisibly present and hearing the prayers!" says Tatiana. It occurred to her that if this were true, then God was not high in the sky and far away, as her grandmother had told her.

Then the realization hit her. "If God is present in this church, then I am in the presence of God!" It was at that moment she knew in her soul that God was real and personal.

The pastor's message taught Tatiana that the Bible is the Word of God-the same God she had just come to recognize. She accepted the truth she was hearing from this Bible.

Desperate for rest
Tatiana felt welcomed by the kind Christians at the church, and was compelled to return. The third time she did, she came to the service feeling crushed by the weight of her problems. Then she heard from the Word.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:28-29).

"The words of Jesus gripped my heart," says Tatiana. "It was as if He had spoken directly to me because He knew about how weary and burdened I was over my problems." She decided to accept Jesus' invitation and let Him bring her the rest she so desperately wanted.

A Buddhist believes
"I really cannot explain it, but in those moments of hearing and thinking about the words of Jesus I, a Buddhist, came to believe that Jesus had spoken to me and I needed to go to Him. Faith was born in me. My eyes filled with tears at the reality of it all."

She accepted Jesus that day. Tatiana explains, "I cried out to Jesus to take away my heavy burden of troubles and to give me rest. What joy flooded my inner being as I actually experienced the Lord Jesus lift away from me my burden and then gently place on me His peace."

"I was no longer a believer in Buddha but a believer in Christ."

Miraculous blessings
Tatiana went home and destroyed the relics of her former religion. "I only wanted room in my life for Christ and the Bible," she says. She was baptized and, upon completing a Bible study, received her very own Bible. Shortly after that, her husband accepted Jesus, too.

God miraculously blessed Tatiana and her husband. His leg was healed, so he was able to walk and work again. And they now have two children, a son and a daughter!

Peace despite persecution
Now that she's a Christian, Tatiana's life has a new hardship.

"The anger of my Buddhist relatives is sometimes expressed in ways to humiliate me. They have cut me off from family activities and I am no longer included in relatives' events," she explains. "For comfort I turn to reading the Word of God and hold His promises tightly in my heart."

Tatiana also feels the love and acceptance of her new family, her brothers and sisters in Christ. "I have so much to rejoice and be glad about, because of Jesus."

Southern Sudan—Over 1,000 soldiers find Jesus

On the 7 March 2007 two African Union (AU) peacekeepers were killed and one was seriously injured in Darfur. According to BBC news report, the faction of the Sudan Liberation Army rebels who carried out this attack were supposed to be AU’s partner in implementing Darfur’s peace agreement. This incident has upset the peace agreement signed in 2005 by Sudan’s Islamic government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.

In the last two years since the signing of the peace agreement, Bible League took the opportunity to rebuild the ministry in the churches and explore new ministry fields. God amazingly led Bible League to start a ministry in the army barracks. God’s Word, sharper than the double-edged sword, has penetrated the hearts of the soldiers, convicting them of sin and leading them to salvation.

“I joined Sudan People Liberation Army when I was seventeen. My goal was to kill every Arab I met. When the peace agreement was signed, I had nothing to do. But the Lord had His plan. Someone invited me to join a Bible League Bible study group. Out of curiosity, I joined the group and began reading God’s Word. After four days of study, I was convicted by the Word of God. I realised that my hatred of the Arabs was a sin and sinners have to face God’s wrath. I confessed my sin. Praise God that now I love my Arab brothers,” a soldier testifies.

Another witnesses, “As a soldier, my job was to kill. I lived in war all my life. I had no reason to live and I always wished that I would die. When one of the commanders asked me to accompany him to attend Bible League’s Bible study group, I sat down and listened. Something touched and burned in my heart. I began to cry as I confessed my sins of killing and raping. The person sitting next to me sensed my agony and prayed for me. God restored my life that day.”

These men were two of over 1,000 soldiers who had completed the Project Philip Bible study program. They all were baptised. Last year, Bible League placed a total of 154,763 Scriptures in Southern Sudan, trained 43,576 Bible study graduates and baptised 9,333 new believers.

However, there are still millions of people in Sudan who need God’s Word, including many more soldiers. The National Director in Southern Sudan believes that the Sudanese will only find true peace when they find Jesus, the peace-giver. Will you help place more Scriptures in Sudan, so that more people can be transformed by God’s Word?

MEXICO:
When a girl turns 15 in Latin America, there is usually a celebration. Her mother wanted to give Elia a party, but she didn't feel like celebrating. Her father had just died and she felt abandoned.

"My mother and I continued to go to church," Elia remembers, "but I had no joy in my heart."

Elia and her mother reached a compromise. Instead of a big party, Elia would go on a camping trip with her church. It was a trip where she would find God as her Father.

As she grew in the Lord, Elia developed a passion for reaching others with the message of salvation. Her God-given gift of evangelism was helped by Bible League training.

Her training came at a time when her church was going through a struggle. "We had forgotten that the world needs God's Word," says Elia.

When Elia first put her training to work, she was nervous. But the first woman Elia visited was open to studying the Bible with her. This was a huge encouragement to this young woman who was so excited about sharing her faith.

"You have come at just the right time," said the woman to Elia. "My daughter has been raped and she wants to kill her attacker." Through the Gospel of John, Elia was able to share the love of Jesus with this hurting family.

A lonely woman with no family or friends was also visited by Elia. "As we talked," says Elia, "she admitted to me that she had become a prostitute." This woman was certain that her sin was too severe—she could never find forgiveness.

Elia showed the woman from the Bible that Jesus can and will forgive any sin. "We talked for a long time and she cried inconsolably as she realized she needed Jesus in her life," says Elia.

Today, Elia and her husband serve God as they lead people to Christ by studying God's Word. She sees the lives of those in the studies changing as they learn more about Jesus and His love for them. "But my life has changed, too," says Elia, "as I continue to study for myself and I come to know God more through His Word."

MIDDLE EAST:
Power in God’s Word
“I was the Imam of a Mosque,” says Faroq*. “I decided to examine the life of Jesus in the Injil [Gospels]. I searched until I found a Christian who gave me an Injil—covertly transported into the country by the Bible League.

“I read it and came across ‘Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest,’ and I cried. Such wonderful words! I prayed, ‘If Jesus is God, I want to see you.’ It was a prayer of desperation and deep searching—I really wanted to know! After three days Jesus appeared to me, and I believed.

Jesus Restores and Heals
Faroq recited passages from Scripture to his wife, a devout Muslim. She asked him many questions about the Bible, and then she also become a Christian.

Muslim authorities learned that Faroq is a follower of Christ. He says, “I was interrogated and tortured to give up my Christianity and return to Islam. Everyone, including our family, was against us.”

Then one day a cousin of Faroq came to him in great pain from kidney stones. Faroq said to him, “If a Muslim is able to heal you, I will return to Islam. But Jesus can heal you.”

“How?” his cousin asked. Then Faroq prayed for him in Jesus name.

His cousin left, but then came back early the next morning, and said, “I am healthy again. After I left you, the pain stopped. I went to my doctor and he told me that the stone was gone. He asked what happened. I told him that someone had prayed for me and Jesus had healed me.”

Both were so moved by this event, that they asked Faroq, “What must we do to follow Jesus?” So Faroq led them to Christ.

Loving the Ones Jesus Loves
So far, 36 people in Faroq’s family have been baptized. This has brought overwhelming hardship on all of them. All are now poor since they lost jobs and business because of their Christianity. One cousin was beaten to death by police because he would not renounce Jesus and return to Islam.

But, training and a supply of Scriptures from the Bible League help Faroq remain faithful, “Now I share the Good News of Christ with my countrymen in whatever way I can.”

HUNGARY:
I used to frequent clubs, smoke whatever came my way, and date many wild girls. My body piercings would draw plenty of attention as I often showed them off. I was very belligerent to my parents and everyone around me, except my party buddies.
I enjoyed everything I could and with zest. But, when I reached the age of 21, my life turned so crazy and messed up, I had to move away from my home and live with relatives in another city.

A change of scenery brings new perspective
I found work but my life was still confusing. My aunt and cousin were both Christians, but I didn't know what that meant. Sometimes, my cousin would invite me to a Bible study but I would refuse each time she asked. Then something odd occurred and made me curious about God and the Bible.

My aunt's Bible sat on the table and I thought to pick it up and read, but didn't want anyone to know so I just left it alone. The same day, I was visiting my cousin and she had a Bible sitting on her table, too. I thought it was odd that I would see two Bibles in a day. That's when I felt a stirring inside to know more.

I decided to go to a Bible study with my cousin. After a few visits and studying the Scriptures, I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and was baptized right away.

After my conversion, I completely turned my back on my old life. I even began to preach the Gospel to everyone I met.

My parents didn't like what happened to me. They thought I joined a cult. But they had seen a change in me and eventually they also received Jesus Christ.

My life is so different now and I am so grateful that the Lord saved me from my sins and gave me this new life. I am also thankful to the Bible League for the Bible study books that help me understand and remember the things I learn from God's Word.

KENYA:
This small village in Kenya didn't know God's power until a humble Christian named Anderson was sent to break the strongholds of fear and bring Truth into lives.
Anderson the church planter.
Anderson was a church planter in Samburu, Kenya. He would travel throughout the region evangelizing and sharing God's love to lost souls, yet ill-equipped to follow up a new convert's spiritual journey after he left their village. Then he joined the church planting training through the Bible Networks ministry in Samburu.

Bible Network equips the church planter

"I was now prepared to evangelize and to make strategic follow up with the aim of making any new believer become an active member in a church," Anderson says. "Within six months, I managed to plant a church with the Bibles and skills the Bible Network provided."
Moving forward with his passion for serving the Church, Anderson set his sight toward another village called Supati Ingejek. "All the skills I learned through Bible Network training had proven profitable. I was moved by the Holy Spirit to start a church in this small village of 400 people," he says.
A village with Satan's stronghold

"I surveyed the area and noticed that no pastor or evangelist dared plant a church in this village." It was home to a famous witchdoctor consulted by the old and young.

He controlled the affairs of the people and instilled fear among them. Christians feared to venture into this village.
Anderson claims the village in the name of Christ

"I took time to seek God's intervention and guidance before stepping in and setting up a church." As I began to introduce myself to the people of the village, the witchdoctor confronted me when he realized I spoke of Jesus Christ. I told the people that they can overcome the powers of darkness, including the power of witchdoctors.
The battle rages
"He threatened me and commanded me to leave that village with his assurance that if I attempt to preach or plant a church, I will die!"
Members of the community surrounded the two, telling Anderson that he must plead for mercy from the witchdoctor. "I was filled with power from heaven and said, 'You must repent and accept Christ as your Savior or you will die in your sin!'" he recalls.
Victory is the Lord's
Days later, to Anderson's amazement, "When I came back to follow up on people who had responded to the Gospel, those in the village told me the witchdoctor had collapsed and died—that very same day."
"When the people saw me, they approached me with thanksgiving for many had suffered under the evil influence of this man," Anderson says.
Glory to God for the healthy church Anderson planted in the village of Supati Ingejek, with over 100 people and growing.

Karth awakened from a deep sleep and immediately felt a strong sense of urgency overcome his body. What he had experienced could not have been a dream. It was too real, too lifelike. No, it must have been a vision straight from God.
In the vision, Karth had been clothed in white and sitting in the middle of the desert. Yet he did not feel a single drop of sweat underneath the intense sun. Instead, he was cooled by falling rain and comforted by a soft music playing in the distance.
Karth kneeled by his bedside and began to pray. "Oh God, I have suffered so long. But I know it is you who brings comfort. Come into my heart today-be my rain in the midst of the desert."
Thrown into warIn the years preceding junior high, Karth had lived a peaceful life. He grew up in a happy Cambodian home, and his parents had always provided good care.
But his life was turned upside down in 1975-under the rule of the Pol Pot regime-when the people of Cambodia were thrown into a brutal civil war. It would rage on for more than two decades, and misery, destruction, and death were to become a daily reality.
The memories from the war are painful for Karth to recall. "My whole family had lives of hopelessness, and we no longer saw anything beautiful-only blood, death, and hearing the sounds of weapons. After Pol Pot's regime ended in 1979, only four members of my family were still alive."
God's Word at workAs Karth grew older, he resolved to become a valued employee in the workforce.
He believed that if he worked hard enough, the government would be less likely to draft him into the military and face more death and misery on the Khmer-Thai border.
It was as a manager of a restaurant that Karth first met Pastor Dara, a Christian trained for evangelism by the Bible League. Pastor Dara was well liked and respected by all the employees of the restaurant-in all his visits he always exhibited joy and integrity.
Pastor Dara regularly shared the Gospel with Karth, and even led him through a Bible study. When Karth completed the Bible study, Pastor Dara gave him a brand new Bible to take home. In it he wrote, "May you find wisdom and knowledge in this treasured book."
Transformed by graceIt wasn't long after receiving the Bible, that Karth had his life-transforming vision. God had been working on his heart for quite some time, and he could no longer deny that it was Christ who could fill the void in his life.
After Karth had asked God to forgive him of his sins, he felt a sense of peace and joy that was beyond all worldly explanation. Unable to keep it inside, he began to praise God through song. He vowed to follow the Lord, wherever He might lead.
Hope for lost soulsToday Karth is serving God as the National Coordinator of Evangelism and Discipleship for Bible League in Cambodia. He has a passion for reaching his country through these Bible studies, that others may also know the hope that only comes from the Lord.
"I am bringing lost souls to Christ," he says, "to the One who brings love and fellowship, and unites people, and does not bring division to the people.
"I thank the Lord, who saved me from the wickedness of the world. And for Pastor Dara, who brought salvation to my life-and also my whole family."

Thi Moi, 22, was raised in a family that worships its ancestors—an ancient tradition practiced in Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia. “We kept idols and burned incense on our ancestors’ altars to have more blessings,” she explains.
But the ancestors could not protect Thi Moi’s family from tragedy. “When our house recently burned down, my mother suffered severe burns and died at the hospital,” she says. “I felt so miserable—I saw no future for myself, and was near suicide because of deep sorrow.”
A divine meetingThen one day at the market, she met someone she hadn’t seen in a long time. This old friend listened intently as Thi Moi shared her troubles. “She told me that she had also known misery like me until she found the Lord Jesus,” says Thi Moi.
As her friend explained that God was the creator of the universe and humankind, and that His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus, had come to earth to make atonement for the world’s sins—including hers—Thi Moi became curious. “She urged me to receive the Lord Jesus into my heart so that I, too, could have happiness in this world and everlasting life for my soul,” she says.
Repentance brings His abundant mercyTo learn more, Thi Moi followed her friend to an evangelical church. There the pastor helped her seek repentance for her sins so she could welcome Jesus into her heart.
“I feel a real peace because now it seems the Lord is bearing all of my heavy loads,” Thi Moi rejoices. “I see how the light of the Lord Jesus can lead me in this new life, and I praise Him through sincere prayers and by reading the Holy Bible. I will always remember how wrteched I was before. But now I am a child of God and nothing can compare with His abundant mercy!”

HAITI:His life was one of poverty, crime and violence. Maybe Ricardo's life was doomed from the beginning.
Born into a Port-au-Prince neighborhood, Ricardo's family was poor. As he grew up, Ricardo was desperate for change. Ricardo attended school and his family tried to teach him right from wrong. But by the time he reached 18, Ricardo was ready to make his own way, to make his own choices.
Richardo fit right in"At 18 I abandoned my family and I got involved with drugs and prostitution," remembers Ricardo. With government turmoil dominating so many aspects of Haitian society, it wasn't long before this wayward young man identified himself with the violence on the streets, all in the name of political activism.
"I killed, I broke bones, I blackmailed, and I raped young women," Ricardo says. He made life decisions that he knew would end his life at an early age.
But God took hold of him When he came into contact with the director of the Bible League in Haiti, Jean Bilda Robert, it was a new experience for Ricardo. This troubled young man wasn't used to people expressing love to him or being patient with him.
"Bilda was very tolerant with me," says Ricardo. "After a time, he began talking to me about Jesus." Bilda showed Ricardo that the Bible says he could become a new person.
Ricardo had already decided that his "old person," his old way of living, had no hope or promise for a positive future. He decided to keep listening to the hope-filled words of his new friend.
Slowly but surely the walls came down Ricardo did not come to Christ immediately. But Bilda did not give up. He continued to show the love of Jesus to Ricardo regardless of his response.
But Ricardo could not resist the claims of Christ to make him a new man. "It is with much pride that I announce to the world the changes God has made in my life," says a beaming Ricardo. "I am no longer a slave to drugs or alcohol. I am no longer feared by people. Thanks to God, the Bible League, and my pastor."
Ricardo continues to grow in his new faith. He has been freed of the past and God is using him to share His love with other Haitians who see no hope.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2 Cor. 5:17.

God's Word stops AIDS
Hope for today.

The African pastor sighs, looking around at the faces in his community. “If there is a place where HIV is tough,” he says, “it is this place.” He hears their stories, their heartaches, on a regular basis. People who have never set foot in a church come to him because they have heard he offers a listening ear—and a message of hope.
His message is consistent—God loves them, and He wants to build a relationship with them. The pastor says, “God’s church is doing a great work here. [The infected] are taught from the Word of God that they have a reason for living—to serve God for the short period that God has given them.”
A losing battleAccording to the UN, AIDS is now the number one cause of death on the African continent. Thousands are dying every day. Currently, more than 20 million Africans suffer from HIV/AIDS, and the overwhelming majority of the world's AIDS orphans live on the African continent.
This mounting health crisis has led to an outpouring of humanitarian assistance from countries around the world. Secular and Christian organizations alike are furiously seeking to halt the disease’s spread through contraceptives, sex education, and medical care.
Try as they might, though, it all seems a losing battle—at least on a human level.
A better wayThere is, however, hope for the people of Africa. African Christians are witnessing a miraculous transformation as God’s Word takes hold of communities. According to one such Christian, the Bible has had more of an impact on HIV than any well-meaning organizations or trained professionals.
The Massai, a tribal group of eastern Africa, have been particularly influenced by the teachings of the Bible. Within the Massai culture, sexual behavior is traditionally very open. When men are away from the tribe for hunting, it is perfectly acceptable for other men of the village to sleep with their wives. In addition, it is normal for the men who are away to have intercourse with women outside of their village. Because of this promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases—including HIV/AIDS—spread rapidly.
However, as the Massai are receiving Bibles and instruction from Bible League-trained Christians, incredible changes are taking place. They learn that God intends sex to be a holy act, celebrated between one man and one woman within the boundaries of marriage. As the Massai accept Christ, God changes their hearts, their thinking, and ultimately, their behavior.
A Massai pastor explains, “The Bible has helped us understand more about AIDS and overcome it. It has prevented us from following the former ways of doing things. When people are born again, the Bible instructs them to better ways.”
What’s more, when a Massai turns to God, people of other villages are astounded by the changes. One African Christian explains, “It amazes them and they say, ‘Anybody can give their life to Christ!’ Just the testimony that he was a Massai, that he has changed, and has given his life to Christ moves hundreds to come to know Christ!”
Power of GodGod’s Word is doing what no effort of man has been able to do—God’s Word is stopping the spread of AIDS. The Bible offers Africans hope; the Bible offers Africans instructions; and the Bible offers Africans the fulfillment of living a life in Christ.
